Turkey drops 'new' from currency

After shredding the world's most devalued money in 2005 by dropping six zeros, Turkey is to complete the currency carving by dropping “new” from its name and reverting to “Turkish Lira.”

“The new currency will start circulating Jan. 1, 2009, with the name ‘Turkish Lira.' The term ‘New Turkish Lira' was only a tool for the first part of the transition period,” said Durmuş Yılmaz, governor of the Turkish Central Bank, during yesterday's launch of the advertising campaign for the currency name transition.

Yılmaz said 200 Turkish Lira notes would begin circulation as well, but quickly dismissed any inferences that the Central Bank was trying to keep up with rising inflation.

“There are other factors in deciding the size of the highest note, rather than just inflation rates. Increasing transactions in the economy is one of them,” he said.

The Central Bank's campaign will enter its second stage Oct. 3, as Yılmaz, along with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will present details about the new notes.

“Currently, two thirds of the population have no idea a currency name change is coming,” said Yılmaz.

He said the new notes would have different sizes as a measure against forgery and to facilitate their use by blind people. The depiction of the country's founder, Kemal Atatürk, will stay on the front of all bank notes.

He said “Turkish Lira” would be in use together with the “New Turkish Lira” for one year and during that period all banks would distribute “Turkish Lira” while collecting the “New Turkish Lira.” After Jan. 1, 2010, only Ziraat Bank and the Central Bank will continue changing the new notes.
